Washington Kids in Transition is a volunteer organization committed to providing basic needs to homeless children residing in Washington State. There are over 1200 children in South Snohomish County alone that are considered homeless and part of the McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act. These children may live in shelters, tents, cars, transitional housing or other temporary housing.

Food is a necessity for growth and learning. Our mission is to provide food to the children each day after school. Some of the children will not have another meal from the time they leave school, until they come back to school the next day.  The food is distributed on the bus for them to take home. Currently we provide 250 small food bags each day after school. Last year, we distributed 32,000 small bags of food.

The emergency motel voucher program was created to assist families in crisis.  Washington Kids will provide hotel stay for families enrolled in a transitional program through the  School District and with a recommendation from the District homeless liaison and Student Resource Advocates.  Funding is limited for this program, we need your help.  Last year, we provided 362 nights to families in the district.

Emergency closets–  Currently,  we offer emergency staples to every school in the district. For schools that want a master closet at their school,  we are happy to provide this service.  For others, we can deliver products within 24 hours. (Most times, the same day) Emergency closets consist of grab and go type food, emergency clothing such as socks, t-shirts and underwear, hygiene kits and special request which come from the student support advocate at each school. We partner with Days for Girls to provide hygiene products and Clothes for Kids to provide emergency clothing.

Granted Wishes -This year, we will add an additional component to the emergency closets called Granted Wishes.  Counselors and Advocates  have the opportunity to make individual requests on behalf of our homeless students.  These requests can range from sports equipment to prom tickets, sleeping bags to bus passes.

We are a 501(c)3 local organization dedicated to making sure each child has an opportunity to be fed, shelter and an education. With your help, we can accomplish these goals. To learn more about these programs and how you can get involved, please visit our donations page.
