Washington Kids in Transition is committed to providing basic needs to homeless children residing in Washington State, including food, emergency closets, motel vouchers, transportation vouchers. Our goal is to remove stressors that can keep homeless students from attending school because kids should not have to worry about where they will sleep or what they will eat.
We partner with social workers within each school to provide a safety net of resources to students struggling to stay in school.
There are over 1200 children in South Snohomish County that are considered homeless and part of the McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act. These children may live in shelters, tents, cars, transitional housing or other temporary housing.
The needs of each homeless family is different, as licensed social workers guide families out of homelessness, Washington Kids is there to provide the resources each family needs, such as:
- Motel vouchers for families facing immediate homelessness
- Rental and utility assistance in an effort to prevent homelessness
- Rental deposits for families ready to move from a motel to apartment
- Emergency closets providing emergency food, toiletries, hygiene, coats, shoes socks and underwear
- 250 bags of food every school day for students riding McKinney Vento busses.
Food for the long bus ride home
Food is a necessity for growth and learning. Our mission is to provide supplemental food to children each school day. Some of the children will not have another meal from the time they leave school until they come back to school the next day. The snacks are distributed on the bus for them to take home. We solely rely on community donations to provide this food.
Some of the children do not have access to kitchens so the food handed out needs to portable, individually wrapped and ready-to-eat. Last year, with your help, we provided 32,000 small bags of food
Granola bars, pop tarts, raisins, instant oatmeal, individual size cereal boxes and portable milk. Fruit roll ups or fruit snacks, fruit pouches, beef jerky, fruit cups, pudding cups, hot chocolate packets (just add water), cup of noodles, cups of soup with pop-top lids, instant mac and cheese, portable chicken or tuna and crackers packets. Cheese and crackers, juice boxes, small water bottles, shelf stable individual milks, individual packages of pretzels or crackers.
We also can use donations of paper lunch bags and plastic spoons.
